Opening an RDS File
The RDS file type is primarily associated with DAZ Studio.
What is an RDS file?
How can I open an RDS file?
You need a suitable software like DAZ Studio to open an RDS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RDS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RDS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RDS files:
- DAZ Studio by DAZ
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RDS files are often referred to as DAZ Studio 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ERMIS (radio data system encoders) by ERMISERMIS was a GIS software designed to help first responders find the fastest routes to locations where there's been an emergency in Madurai city. The RDS file contained radio data system encoders located in the same folder as an RDS encoder control program. This file format is classified as Data.
- RStudio (datasets) by RstudioRStudio is an integrated development environment consisting of an interpreter, code editor, console for writing, debugging, and executing code written in R or Python programming languages. R uses Gzip format to store data in RDS files. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Reading and Writing Data Files, R (programming language)
- SQL Server (data source) by MicrosoftSQL Server is a relational database management system built to run on Windows platforms. The Reporting Services utility which generates and delivers relevant reports about database state and activity across enterprise applications stores its data source in RDS files. This file format is classified as Database.
RDS format details:
To find out what program is needed to open RDS files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the RDS files looks like this:
RDS is a very common file type and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 85% of all RDS files are based on the well-known GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 680 bytes to 22 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Files like these have the following tags: gadm, data, model, features, info, package, result and seqtab.
- 5% of all RDS files start with the bytes 58 0A 00 00 crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are on average 5 MB in size and range from 4 KB to 390 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as UTF-8. Files like these have the following tags: corp.
All other RDS files (10%) have no consistent format, such as zXZ. Files like these are sometimes linked to road, rods, counties, metadata, counts, cells or task. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your RDS file!
Technical Data for RDS File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

an rds 3D scene or animation is a special file format by DAZ and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RDS files
- Associate the RDS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d scene or animations. Because only the current version supports the latest RDS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the DAZ manufacturer website after an available DAZ Studio update.
- To make sure that your RDS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RDS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
