All about REL Files
The REL file type is primarily associated with OpenIV.
What is a REL file?
- Game files: In games like GTA V and Gran Turismo, these files hold assets and game data. Tools such as OpenIV let you open and modify them safely.
- Tax documents: In Italy, some REL files store tax receipts and tax return data for agencies like Agenzia delle Entrate and are processed with Entratel software. More information is available on their official sites: Agenzia delle Entrate and Entratel Portal.
- Development objects: For systems such as the Nintendo 64, REL files are relocatable object files used by a linker during software development.
- Other uses: Some REL files also serve as update patches or external links in various software projects.
FilExt.com note: The file’s structure depends on the software that created it. Use the appropriate tool to open or edit your file so that you do not disrupt its function.
How can I open a REL file?
You need a suitable software like OpenIV to open a REL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your REL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a REL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

REL file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the REL files:
The REL extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in REL files:
- 25% of all REL files start with the bytes 97 00 00 00, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 830 bytes in size and range from 830 bytes to 870 bytes. The file type was created recently. The following filename is common: brabus850_game.dat151.rel or r35sound_game.dat151.rel. Files like these are sometimes connected to game, sound, brabus, cracklemod, dlcr, toysupmk and rotary.
- 10% of all REL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "36 00 00 00" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 4 KB. r35sound_sounds.dat54.rel or m5cracklemod_sounds.dat54.rel is a typical file name. Files like these have the following tags: sounds.
The remaining 65% of all REL files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. SNR. The category is wmsirens, audioconfig, dlcbattle, dett, categories, dlcluxe, elegyx, mercm, code or drug. Just click the "Choose your .rel file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your REL file is.

a rel data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with REL files
- Associate the REL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest REL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available OpenIV update.
- To make sure that your REL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .REL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
