Opening REV Files
The REV file type is primarily associated with WinRAR.
What is a REV file?
- Recovery: These files contain redundancy data that helps in the recovery and reconstruction of damaged or missing RAR files. Since REV files are generated by a compression program that creates RAR files, every RAR volume file contains at least one recovery file. The single recovery file shares a link to all the RAR volume files, making it possible to repair them as a single volume. If a single file is missing or damaged, the REV file checks the rest of the volume to check and repair information that is missing. A drawback here is that, the algorithm used to recover information may only recover a single file. If two files from the volume are damaged, recovery is not possible.
- Accessing the files: The correct program to open REV files needs to be installed and associated with these files for easy access. Double click on the file and if no program is automatically selected, then right-click on the REV file and select 'Open with' and choose the program. There are various easily available programs e.g WinRAR.
How to open REV files
You need a suitable software like WinRAR to open a REV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your REV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a REV file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. REV files are often referred to as WinRAR data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

REV file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the REV files comes to the following conclusion:
An REV file is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 35% of all REV files are based on the well-known RAR file format. RAR is a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error correction and file spanning. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 440 KB and 1 GB in size. The file type was created recently. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Rar!. An example of a file name is MISIALIFEISGINGNANDN.part01.rev. These files are often associated with todoinmega and scan.
- 4% of all REV files are associated with Revolution MetaCard stack. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 2 KB to 2 MB. The keywords REVO are typical for these files.
The remaining 61% of all REV files are files with no common format, often, for example, PDF and WordPerfect. Often described as wilsonernan, review or data. If you want to find out what your REV file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a rev recovery volume is a special file format by RARLAB and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with REV files
- Associate the REV file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open recovery volumes. Because only the current version supports the latest REV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the RARLAB manufacturer website after an available WinRAR update.
- To make sure that your REV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .REV file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
