What is an RLA file?

RLA files mostly belong to Realtime Landscaping Architect. RLA files most often are used by the Realtime Landscaping Architect application. They hold project data that defines outdoor design elements and are saved in a text-based format using UTF-16 (LE) encoding.
Some versions of the RLA file also serve other roles in 3D rendering contexts. For example, a number of these files work as a Radiance image file format for rendering projects in Cinema 4D, and a few are designed as RenderMan Look-At files in Maya.

• 75% of all RLA files are based on the popular UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. RLA files are between 220 KB and 3 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: CustomDataOffset=0000000000, FullScreenRes=0,0, MovieRes=640,480, [Settings]=605 and FileVersion=513. Files like these are sometimes connected to movie, plan, design, archive, backyard, site, landscape, revised, backup, family, master, house and auto.
• 20% of all RLA files are associated with Alias Wavefront Raster bitmap. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 3 MB. The keywords 0.3100 0.3160, 0.6700 0.0800 and 0.2100 0.7100 are typical for these files. Such files are related to spinning, triple, name, view, render and mask.
