All about RMS Files
The RMS file type is primarily associated with RealPlayer.
What is an RMS file?
How to open an RMS file
You need a suitable software like RealPlayer to open an RMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RMS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

RMS file format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the RMS files produces the following result:
The RMS file extension is not widely used. Such a file does not have a uniform file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all RMS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "midp-rms" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 72 bytes and 3 KB in size. The files contain the following words: midp-rms. Files like these have the following tags: hist, dichat, reserved, spaces and neon.
- 6% of all RMS files start with the bytes 01 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 16 MB to 320 MB. The following filename is common: Ch02_CH 02.rms.
The remaining 79% of all RMS files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. RMSFB. Sometimes used for prefiltered, data or func. If you want to find out which format your RMS file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .rms file to analyze".
