What is an RNT file

RNT files mostly belong to RichNote / RightNote. RNT files store note data generated by specialized note‐taking applications.
Most RNT files use the ZIP format. This means they are backup files that collect note entries in one compressed archive. They are used in systems such as the ColorNote Note Backup by RichNote.

ZIP-based RNT files: These files hold note data in a compressed structure. You can extract the note entries with archive tools, as the content is organized in a ZIP container.

SQL-based RNT files: Some RNT files contain a database structure, holding note information in SQL format. These files are linked to the RightNote Notebook File system. To view these, you may need the corresponding note software or a database viewer. More details are available at the RightNote webpage.

How to open RNT files

You need a suitable software like RichNote / RightNote to open an RNT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RNT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RNT file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the RNT files is as follows:

The RNT file extension is rarely used and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 75% of all RNT files internally use the ZIP format, so several files are combined and compressed into one RNT file. The number of files included is on average 1 and ranges from 1 to 5. File names are e.g. \databases\richnote and \databases\richnote-journal. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are on average 31 KB in size and range from 4 KB to 540 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: databases/richnote. Some examples of file names are backup.rnt. These files can be linked to memo.
• 7% of all RNT files are based on the popular SQL file format. An SQL file contains a lightweight SQLite database, widely used in application development for storing application related data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. RNT files can be up to 26 MB in size, but are often around 180 KB - 10 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: SQLite format 3.
