What is an RPG file?

RPG files mostly belong to DTPS. Your RPG file may not be one-size‐fits‐all – its function depends on the origin.

• Industrial Robot Program: This file can store instructions that control welding robots in automation environments. It is meant to be run on specialized controllers and viewed using vendor tools (for example, products from DTPS).
• Game Development Data: Other RPG files are created by game engines like RPG Maker or OHRRPGCE. They hold project data, character assets (sometimes packaged in ZIP format) or even embedded images (often in PNG) and are opened with the respective game editors (RPG Maker website).
• Relay Configuration File: In some cases the file stores settings for electrical relay systems (such as those used in Schneider Electric’s Sepam S50 equipment).
• Report Program Document: A few files come from IBM i environments. They hold report program data and are part of the iSeries RPG programming framework.

How to open an RPG file

You need a suitable software like DTPS to open an RPG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RPG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RPG file directly in the browser:. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the RPG files:

An RPG file includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in RPG files:

• 30% of all RPG files start with the magic bytes ~ðÿ, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. RPG files are between 770 bytes and 30 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. robot. These files are attributed to prog, home and weld.
• 15% of all RPG files start with the magic bytes BROWSE.TXT, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. RPG files are between 3 MB and 43 MB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ARCHINYM.LMP, BROWSE.TXT, ohrrpgce, ATTACKS.RGFX, BINSIZE.BIN, RELD, ATTACK.BIN and OHRRPGCE wip 20160110. An example of a file name is 8bit.rpg or sneakfeast-noicon.rpg. These files are attributed to sneakfeast, noicon, lustyrinth and layers.
