What is an RSL file?

RSL files mostly belong to RSLogix 5000. RSL files are used in various fields to store specialized data. Their purpose and internal structure depend on the originating software.

Industrial Automation: Some RSL files contain ladder logic instructions used in systems like RSLogix 5000 and LogixPro. They help control and report on programmable logic controllers.

Scientific Measurement: Other RSL files store experimental data such as rheology measurements or texture analysis results. These files often use internal formats like Microsoft Compound or GZIP compression and are used by instruments from TA Instruments or Stable Micro Systems.

Risk Analysis & Simulation: A subset of RSL files is saved in XML format to hold simulation parameters for risk solvers. They are used in tools like Resolver One for financial or operational modeling.

Gaming & Graphics: Some RSL files are resource files in video games (for example, in Resident Evil) or contain shading language code used in rendering processes.

Other Uses: Additional variations include outbound call lists, test results, and report or passport data files used by platforms such as Oracle, RSLinx Classic, or LabVIEW.
Because the extension is shared among unrelated sectors, identifying a specific RSL file often means checking its metadata or the software that created it. How do you open RSL files?

You need a suitable software like RSLogix 5000 to open an RSL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. RSL file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the RSL files produces the following result:

The RSL extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in RSL files:

• 30% of all RSL files start with the bytes FILE,LAD 2, which are crucial for this file format. These files contain text and words as well as binary data. The average file size is 1 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 2 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The keywords RCM, 1 XIC, FILE,LAD 2, 0 EOR, 2 XIC, 1 EOR, 1 OTE, 0 NXB, SOR,0 XIC,I:1/0 and 1 BST are typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: door, logix, frdinstruction, light, exercise, bottle, traffic, simulator and line.
• 15% of all RSL files use the same file format, which have the signature RMHG. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 760 KB in size and range from 34 KB to 3 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as RMHG. TRV001.RSL or TEXTURE.RSL is a typical file name. Files like these are sometimes connected to item, menu, eveitem, common, npcsm and title.
