Opening an SBC File
The SBC file type is primarily associated with Space Engineers.
What is an SBC file?
For example, one common use is in Space Engineers where the file is an XML configuration file. In this role it holds game settings and parameters that the game reads when it starts up. You can inspect such a file in any text editor. More on this can be found at the Space Engineers website.
Another use is for audio. In many cases, SBC files contain sound data encoded with the Low Complexity Subband Codec (SBC). This codec is widely used for Bluetooth audio transmission. If the file is binary and not human‐readable, it is likely holding compressed audio data. For more details on the codec, visit the Bluetooth website.
Other less common roles include:
How to open SBC files
You need a suitable software like Space Engineers to open an SBC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SBC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SBC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SBC files:
- Space Engineers
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SBC files are often referred to as Space Engineers games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Sagebrush Corporation Spectrum CIRC/CAT Report(this is a suggested extension in their manual; it could be any extension)
- SBC Compressed ArchiveThis format is a variable rate compressed audio format averaging 18 kbs used by the VPIM implementations on several voice messaging products of the Octel Messaging Division of Lucent Technologies. The data is a binary format with no header or trailer. The compression algorithm is a proprietary speech compression algorithm developed by the Octel Messaging Division of Lucent Technologies. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 53 42 43 1E, ASCII: SBC.
SBC file format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the SBC files is as follows:
An SBC file includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 25% of all SBC files are associated with Space Engineers Blueprint files, which internally utilize the well-known XML format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 26 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0"?>, type and <Definitions xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">. The file name bp.sbc or Sandbox.sbc is characteristic of these files. Such files sometimes refer to blocks, cube, physical and config.
- 20% of all SBC files start with the magic bytes 9C F3, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 23 KB to 52 KB in size. The following filename is common: connected.sbc or pairing.sbc. Such files are related to disconnected, failed, power and successful.
The remaining 55% of all SBC files are different files with different signatures, often, for example, database. Tagged as battery, mira, primary, zaxxon, bitrate, voice or samp. You can get all the details of your SBC file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sbc file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for SBC File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

an sbc data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SBC files
- Associate the SBC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SBC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Space Engineers update.
- To make sure that your SBC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SBC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
