Opening SBW Files
The SBW file type is primarily associated with Savings Bond Wizard.
What is an SBW file?
Structure: An SBW file is a binary data file that contained saved information pertaining to a user's savings bonds records. This included financial records that, amongst other things, defined the following:
- Purchase date
- Denomination information
- Interest
- Serial Number
- Yield
- Projected values
Compatible software: The original software released for these files has been discontinued, and is no longer available. It has been replaced with an online application, Savings Bond Calculator, which deals in a new file format: HTM. It is now impossible to open SBW files without doing it manually, or possessing an old copy of the original software installed on an old copy of the supporting operating system.
How to open SBW files
You need a suitable software like Savings Bond Wizard to open an SBW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SBW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SBW file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SBW file extension format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the SBW files comes to the following conclusion:
SBW is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 90% of all SBW files start with the bytes 00 00 crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 560 bytes to 12 KB. This is an old file type which is rarely used today. The following keywords are characteristic: CBond. These files are often associated with bonds, savings, bond and inventory, and almost always comprise personal data.
The remaining 10% of all SBW files are files with no common format. Just click the "Choose your .sbw file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your SBW file is.
