What is an SCD file?

SCD files mostly belong to Schedule+ by Microsoft. SCD is a "Substation Configuration Descriptor" file and a part of the Substation Configuration Language (or SCL). Defined in the IEC 61850 standard for layered communications in substations, SCL outlines the parameters that have to be satisfied when setting up individual electrical substation devices to be used as a combined and cohesive system. There are multiple types of SCL files depending on their purpose. Structure: SCD ("Substation Configuration Descriptor") is a type of SCL file that contains information describing the whole substation. Out of the standard SCL file template, and SCD file contains the following parts:

  • "Substation" - describes different elements of a substation, such as devices, connections, etc.
  • "Communication" - defines different communication points, such as sub-networks and access points.
  • "IED" ("Intelligent Electronic Device") - defines information related to the IED.
  • "DataTypeTemplates" - describes information related to logical devices and nodes, along with other related data.

Related files: Other SCL file types include:

  • ICD - "IED Capability Description"
  • SSD - "System Specification Description"
  • CID - "Configured IED Description"
  • IID - "Instantiated IED Description"
  • SED - "System Exchange Description"

SCD format details:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SCD files looks like this:

The SCD extension is quite commonly used. The file itself includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

All the rest of the SCD files (65%) have different formats, often e.g. SCD Square Enix Sound Container File, XML, INFO and AhnLab. The category is archive, station, data, ullow, update, chart or form. If you want to find out what your SCD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
