Opening a SEQ File
The SEQ file type is primarily associated with SnapGene.
What is a SEQ file?
A SEQ file is a container that holds a sequential set of data entries. The content depends on the software that created it and can include very different types of data.
Biological Sequence Data
Many SEQ files store DNA sequencing results. They often use simple text formats, sometimes in FASTA style, so the file contains nucleotide sequences that can be used in bioinformatics analysis. Programs like 4Peaks, SnapGene and BioEdit are used to view and edit these files.
Other Uses
FilExt.com tips: Each SEQ file is meant to keep a series of data items in order. To view one properly, use the software designed for that particular type of sequence. Often, the file contains internal metadata that helps in identifying its proper use.
How to open a SEQ file
You need a suitable software like SnapGene to open a SEQ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SEQ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SEQ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SEQ files:
- SnapGene
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SEQ files are often referred to as SnapGene data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Bubble Chamber Sequential Instruction File
- Chromeleon
- CyberPaintAn Atari ST graphic format. This file format is classified as Graphic.
- dnaLIMS (Sequence) by dnaToolsDNA sequencing software. Site requires a login. The Mime types used with this association are: application/seq.
- Insight II (Amino Acid Sequence File) by Accelrys Software Inc.Insight II is a molecular modeling environment that provides a graphical interface to algorithms for molecular dynamics, homology modeling, de novo design, and electrostatics.

- StreamPix (Norpix Sequence Format) by NorPix, Inc.StreamPix is a digital video recording software that allows you to grab live uncompressed or compressed video directly from IEEE fire wire, analog, high speed or high resolution digital cameras to your hard disk drive or RAM memory.
- TestStand Sequence File
- xfitXfit is a map-fitting and molecular modeling program to display or manipulate models and fit data to electron density. xfit accepts .PDB files, phase files (in X-Plor, TNT, or CIF (SHELX List 6) format; .FCF is accepted as equivalent to .PHS), map files, .VU (vector or line) file, viewpoint (.VP) files, script (.SCRIPT) files, ridgelines (.BONES) files, and sequence (.SEQ) files. SEQ format details:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the SEQ files is as follows:
SEQ is a very commonly used file extension and does not have a uniform file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in SEQ files:
- 9% of all SEQ files belong to Norpix sequence. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. A typical file size is 71 MB. This file type was primarily in use more than 10 years ago. The following keywords are characteristic: Norpix seq and No Description. An example of a file name is V000.seq or V001.seq.
- 6% of all SEQ files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "3E 31" at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 1 KB. The files contain the following words: NCBI. Such files are related to variants, crispr, base, forward and psik.
All the rest of the SEQ files (85%) have different formats, such as FFF, NNNNNNNN, SEQ, TOF, GBBCT, Created and pQES. Sometimes used for sosh, sequence, premix, movie, control, pcfdr or pcfd. If you want to find out which format your SEQ file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .seq file to analyze".

a seq sequence file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SEQ files
- Associate the SEQ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open sequence files. Because only the current version supports the latest SEQ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available SnapGene update.
- To make sure that your SEQ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SEQ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
