Opening a SES File

The SES file type is primarily associated with Audacity.

SESFile Extension SES
File extension: SES
File type:  session file

What is a SES file?

SES files mostly belong to Audacity. SES files are not defined by a single standard but are session files that record project or operational data.
  • Vehicle Diagnostics: Files produced by systems like ODIS-S use a ZIP container to hold diagnostic session details such as error codes and sensor logs.
  • Audio Sessions: Programs such as Audacity and Cool Edit Pro save project arrangements, track settings, and effect parameters in these files. Similar session data may also be used with Pro Tools.
  • Compressed/Encrypted Data: Other SES files employ zlib compression or encryption. They can store Spanish tax return details (Tax Agency info), encrypted disk images from Safe Exam Browser, JetForm symbol data (DataIO), digital mixing console sessions for DiGiCo, recovery session logs from PhotoRec, or even sonar survey records (SonarWiz).
  • FilExt.com note: Each SES file must be opened with the software that created it. Inspecting file headers with a text editor can help identify its origin, but avoid renaming the extension arbitrarily.

    How to open SES files

You need a suitable software like Audacity to open a SES file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SES file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SES file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SES files:

    1. Audacity
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SES files are often referred to as Audacity data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. Audition (Session File) by Adobe Systems Incorporated
Adobe Audition (formerly Cool Edit Pro) is a digital audio editor computer program featuring both a multitrack, non-destructive mix/edit environment and a destructive-approach waveform editing view. This file type used to be produced by Cool Edit (a shareware program) before Adobe bought them out in 2003. This file is similar to a playlist in that it contains meta information about the session but no actual audio. To save your multitrack project as a .WAV or .MP3, go to File, and select Save Mixdown As. The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 43 4F 4F 4C 4E 45 53 53, ASCII: COOLNESS. Program ID is Cool.Edit.Pro.session.file, Cool.Edit.session.file
    3. Clarion for Modula-2 (Session Data) by SoftVelocity
Clarion employs template driven technology to create database-driven applications. Related links: Clarion Magazine, Clarion Information
    4. Digital Audio Editor File

    6. HostAccess (Session Configuration File) by Quovadx, Inc.

HostAccess 7.2 allows you to rapidly transform the interface of existing host applications with toolbars, mouse support, pushbuttons, Active-X controls as well as the powerful AutoGUI and Web page integration. The SES file contains the last session configuration used for the named session. Hostaccess generates a .DAT from this .SES each time it is used. The file can be edited manually using any text editor. Paramters can be added/changed/deleted at will. Care needs to be taken though as there is no offical documentation as to the purpose of any of the paramters in this file. This file format is classified as Text.
    7. Hummingbird Exceed X-Session
    8. Moziac (Session) by SWTBASE Softwares

    9. SciTE

It is best used for jobs with simple configurations. .SES files contain the full paths of files that were open at the time of the session file creation. This file format is classified as Text.
    10. Shadow Security Scanner Session

    SES file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the SES files:

The SES extension is very commonly found and has no uniform or dominant file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

All other SES files (70%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. Cool Edit / Audition Session, zlib, JetDB, QUEST, SES, DiGiCo and CHARTER. Often described as encrypted, volume, gopr, session, video or show. If you want to find out which format your SES file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .ses file to analyze".

How to solve problems with SES files

    • Associate the SES file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open session files. Because only the current version supports the latest SES file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Audacity update.
    • To make sure that your SES file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
    • Click here to open your .SES file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
