All about SHD Files

The SHD file type is primarily associated with Print Spooler.

SHDFile Extension SHD
File extension: SHD
File type:  shadow spooler

What is an SHD file?

SHD files mostly belong to Print Spooler by Microsoft. An SHD file is a print job shadow containing header information about a print job initiated by the Print Spooler service on Windows operating system. Information saved in an SHD file includes a copy of print job settings saved in the actual spooled document (SPL file). The Print Spooler saves SHD and SPL files to the \Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS\ folder of a system. Another type of SHD file is a shadeset symbol created by ArcGIS geographic information system. PVsyst photovoltaic module design and power system development environment saves a photovoltaic module object in an SHD file.

How to open an SHD file

You need a suitable software like Print Spooler to open an SHD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SHD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SHD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SHD files:

  1. Print Spooler by Microsoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SHD files are often referred to as Print Spooler systems because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. ArcGIS (shadeset symbol) by ESRI
ArcGIS is a geographic information software suite with 2D and 3D image processing, data visualization, and mapping support. It saves a shadeset symbol in an SHD file. This file format is classified as GIS.
  3. Bryce (shader/materials catalogue) by DAZ
Bryce is a 3D modelling and design environment for creating photorealistic scenes and worlds. It uses an SHD file to save shaders and materials. This file format is classified as 3D Image.
  4. PVsyst (photovoltaic module object) by PVsyst Team
PVsyst is a photovoltaic module design and solar power systems simulation software. It saves a photovoltaic module object in an SHD file. This file format is classified as CAD.

SHD file format:

To find out what program is needed to open SHD files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the SHD files is as follows:

SHD is one of the most common file extensions and includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

All the rest of the SHD files (25%) have different formats, often e.g. ArtCAM Shader settings, UTF-8 and TestDefine. The category is project, blackplastic, shaders, body or gold. If you want to find out what your SHD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an shd shadow spooler is a special file format by Microsoft and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with SHD files

  • Associate the SHD file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open shadow spoolers. Because only the current version supports the latest SHD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Print Spooler update.
  • To make sure that your SHD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .SHD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
