What is an SHL file?

SHL files mostly belong to Shot Lister. The SHL extension is used for files that do not follow one strict standard. Instead, they are employed by different industries for specific data tasks.
For example, one common usage is as a film and TV shot list file. These files often use an internal JSON format and are handled by applications such as Shot Lister.
Other uses include:

• CNC program files and shell scripts – these can contain machine instructions or shell parameters.
• XFS file headers – these act as shell parameter files with system-related information.
• Game save files – used by games like Stronghold Crusader or Kingmaker to store progress.

How to open an SHL file

To find out what program is needed to open SHL files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the SHL files is as follows:

SHL is not a common file extension and includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 10% of all SHL files are using the well-known JSON file format to store the data. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 15 KB with most files being between 3 KB and 57 KB in size. The files contain the following words: scenes, action, fullPageCount, locationName, note, numberExt, pageNumber, keywords and uuid.
• 7% of all SHL files have the same signature 02 00 00 00 06 00 00 00 61 75 74 68 6F 72 07. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 340 KB to 620 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Firefly, author, balanced, kingofthehill, mapsize, maxplayers, type, version, lastsave and warcampaign.

All the rest of the SHL files (83%) have different formats, often, for example, WordPerfect. Sometimes used for journal, similar, level, param, data, economics or quarterly.
