All about SIB Files
The SIB file type is primarily associated with Sibelius.
What is a SIB file?
The SIB file is mainly used as a Sibelius score file. It holds music notation data created with Sibelius, which stores notes, layout, dynamics, and playback instructions in a proprietary binary format.
If you open a SIB file with the proper software, you will see a complete musical score ready for editing and printing.
In rare cases, a SIB file can also be a TsiLang translation data file used for software localization tasks. This alternate use stores language strings and regional settings for applications.
- Sibelius score file: Contains detailed musical notation for composers and arrangers.
- TsiLang translation file: Includes localization data for software interfaces.
Visit Avid Sibelius for more details on music score files and TsiLang for localization information.
FilExt.com tip: Ensure you open your SIB file using the correct version of Sibelius or TsiLang software, depending on its origin.
How to open SIB files
You need a suitable software like Sibelius to open a SIB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SIB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SIB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SIB file extension format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SIB files looks like this:
The SIB file extension is not widely used. Such a file predominantly uses a uniform format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 90% of all SIB files are Sibelius Music - Score files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 24 KB and 120 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. The files contain the following words: SIBELIUS. Such files sometimes refer to music, little, blank, solo, composition, marche, treble, piano, theme, bass and drum.
- 6% of all SIB files start with the bytes SIB file: TsiLang binary translation data, which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are 15 KB to 290 KB in size, with a median of 100 KB. The files contain the following words: SIB file: TsiLang binary translation data. Registration.sib is a typical file name.
The remaining 4% of all SIB files are files with no common format. Just click the "Choose your .sib file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your SIB file is.

How to solve problems with SIB files
- Associate the SIB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open score files. Because only the current version supports the latest SIB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Sibelius update.
- To make sure that your SIB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SIB file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
