All about SIGN Files
The SIGN file type is primarily associated with CryptoPro CSP.
What is a SIGN file?
This means that the signature is stored separately from the main document. When paired with its associated file, the signature helps check if the file has been modified after signing.
Key details as outlined by FilExt.com:
How to open SIGN files
You need a suitable software like CryptoPro CSP to open a SIGN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SIGN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SIGN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SIGN files:
- CryptoPro CSP
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SIGN files are often referred to as CryptoPro CSP encodeds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Archive
- GnuPG (Key File) by Free Software Foundation, Inc.GnuPG is a complete and free replacement for PGP. Because it does not use the patented IDEA algorithm, it can be used without any restrictions. GnuPG is a RFC2440 (OpenPGP) compliant application.
SIGN file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the SIGN files:
The SIGN file extension is quite common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all SIGN files are based on the well-known certificate file format. A digital certificate is a unique, digitally signed document which authoritatively identifies the identity of an individual or organization. Using public key cryptography, its authenticity can be verified to ensure that the software or website you are using is legitimate. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. Most of these files are 680 bytes to 830 bytes in size. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. The files contain the following words: ----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE---- and iQIcBAABAgAGBQJc. A usual file name is john-1.9.0-jumbo-1-win64.7z.sign or john-1.9.0-jumbo-1-win64.zip.sign. These files are often associated with jumbo, sums and wine.
- 10% of all SIGN files use the same file format, which have the signature 89 02. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. SIGN files are between 540 bytes and 560 bytes in size. The file name OpenJDK11U-jdk_x64_windows_2020-06-01_10.zip.sign or Solus-4.2-Budgie.iso.sha256sum.sign is typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: openjdk, windows, linux and budgie.
All other SIGN files (55%) have no uniform format, often, for example, YJKoZIhvcNAQcCoI. Files like these are sometimes linked to openjdk, windows, linux, message, watermark, sgml or tech. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your SIGN file!
Technical Data for SIGN File Extension
a sign digital signature file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SIGN files
- Associate the SIGN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open digital signature files. Because only the current version supports the latest SIGN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available CryptoPro CSP update.
- To make sure that your SIGN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
