What is a SITE file?

SITE files mostly belong to Salesforce Experience Cloud. SITE files serve different roles based on the system that creates them.
For many users, these files act as a Salesforce Experience Cloud template that uses a JSON structure to define page layouts and design elements. They are used by the Salesforce Community Cloud and managed with tools like Experience Builder.
Other SITE files are site-wide configuration files. They store settings that tell software how to run.
A third use is in robotics: some SITE files hold map data and configuration for mobile industrial robots. These are used by applications such as MiR Commander to guide robot navigation. More on this can be found at MiR Robots.
Viewing and editing:
  • Open Salesforce-based SITE files with a text editor that supports JSON.
  • Use the dedicated application (like Experience Builder or MiR Commander) when available.
  • Always back up the original file before editing.
  • How to open a SITE file

You need a suitable software like Salesforce Experience Cloud to open a SITE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SITE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SITE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

How to solve problems with SITE files

    • Associate the SITE file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest SITE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Salesforce Experience Cloud update.
    • To make sure that your SITE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
