What is a TCW file?

TCW files mostly belong to TurboCAD by IMSI. A TCW file is a 2D or a 3D drawing created with the Windows version of TurboCAD computer-aided design software. This file is saved in Compound Document format. It contains vector graphics objects, layout information, and metadata which make up a drawing. TurboCAD for macOS does not support TCW files. To import such drawings into the macOS edition, you must first export the TCW file to DWG or DXF format on a Windows instance of TurboCAD.

How do you open TCW files?

You need a suitable software like TurboCAD from IMSI to open a TCW file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TCW file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TCW file directly in the browser:. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. The TCW extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a special format. But the following two file formats are common:

• 96% of all TCW files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The app name of a TCW file is TurboCAD for Windows or TurboCAD 2015 for Windows. There is also a CLSID, a globally-unique identifier of a COM (Component Object Model) object: 6a481002-e531-11cf-a115-00a024158daf or db6b9320-df91-101b-8e21-00aa0030b6f5. The file contains several sections with names like Contents, SummaryInformation, VersionInfo, Data, Graphics, AddIns, Styles and AppTablesInfo. The average file size is 100 KB with most files being between 29 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type is very old but is also used today. Such files are related to movie, plan, floor, layout, electrical, basement, schematic, existing, drawing, master, wiring, first, video, deck, line and site.
