Opening TCX Files
The TCX file type is primarily associated with Garmin Training Center.
What is a TCX file?
- Main Use: These files are XML files that enable transferring data throughout fitness devices. This format was introduced with the Garmin Training Center in 2007. These types of files contain information related to heart rate, bicycle cadence, running cadence, calories, lap time, distance, intensity, and type of sport. Due to the fact it exchanges GPS track data, the TCX format is often considered similar to a GPX format. The difference, however, is that TCX considers a track as an activity, not a series of GPS points.
- Other Uses: The TCX extension is also related to the TestComplete script format. This is a program that enables testing the user interface of any application. It contains a set of files such as XML, CHM, PNG, VBS, and BMP files. TCX can also refer to a TurboCAD 3D model text file. This file includes a 2D or 3D model saved in a text format. TurboCAD's TCX files are supported by TurboCAD's software on MacOS and Windows based systems.
- Adoption: TXC files are supported on a set of operating systems through a variety of programs. Utilities like Garmin Training Center on MacOS and Windows-based systems, and Google Earth on MacOS, Linux and Windows can open and use these files.

TCX file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the TCX files looks like this:
TCX is one of the most common file extensions and mainly uses a special format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all TCX files are Garmin Training Center Database XML files, which are using the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 8 KB to 2 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/TrainingCenterDatabase/v2, TrainingCenterDatabase xmlns, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, xsi and http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance. Some examples of file names are 2020-06-01 10_30.0.tcx. Files like these are sometimes connected to activity, walking, exercise, running, ride, cycling, walk, workout and biking.
- 25% of all TCX files save the data in XML file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 540 bytes with most files being between 510 bytes and 2 MB in size. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?>, <Activities>, <TrainingCenterDatabase xmlns="http://www.garmin.com/xmlschemas/TrainingCenterDatabase/v2"> and <Activity Sport="Other">.
