What is a TILE file

TILE files mostly belong to Game engine. TILE files serve as containers for tile-based data used in both game environments and mapping applications.
This file type divides a larger visual or spatial layout into smaller, manageable pieces. Depending on the origin, a TILE file may hold:
  • Game Map Data: These files store level layouts and terrain information. They are used by games such as Civilization 2 (Civilization 2 resource) and Digital Combat Simulator World (DCS World), where the map is built out of many small tiles.
  • Map Tile Images: In this case, the file contains portions of a larger image. Internally, the file may use common image formats like PNG (PNG specification) or JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) to cache and store image parts. These formats are also part of tile data used in digital mapping, following standards such as the MBTiles specification (MBTiles Spec), and are managed by tools like MapTiler (MapTiler) and Mapbox Studio Classic (Mapbox Studio Classic).
  • FilExt.com note: The format is designed for efficient loading and rendering by breaking a large map or game level into smaller pieces. To view a TILE file, use the original software (such as a game engine or a map viewer) or, if the file is based on a standard image like PNG, try renaming it with a .png extension.

    How to open TILE files

You need a suitable software like Game engine to open a TILE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TILE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TILE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the TILE files:

TILE is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in TILE files:

The remaining 55% of all TILE files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. JFIF. Sometimes used for wifi, jpeg, ffffffff, utmdata or ground. If you want to find out what your TILE file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
