What is a TMS file?

TMS files mostly belong to Tableau. TMS files are not one single type of file but a label used by several unrelated applications.
For example, a common usage is as a Tile Map Service file. In this form the file is an XML document used by software such as Tableau to store map or video data.
Other uses include:

Game Data: Files compressed with GZIP that serve as save files in Trackmania or as a Telelogic Modeler System file.

How to open TMS files

You need a suitable software like Tableau to open a TMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. TMS file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. • 30% of all TMS files are based on the well-known XML file format. • 10% of all TMS files use the popular GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 10 KB with most files being between 2 KB and 21 KB in size. The file name DefaultSave_WLD_Exploration_001.tms or DefaultSave_WLD_Exploration_001_BACKUP_1.tms is typical for these files. These files are often associated with save, exploration, backup, high and seas.
