What is a TMS file?

TMS files mostly belong to Tableau. TMS files are not one single type of file but a label used by several unrelated applications.
For example, a common usage is as a Tile Map Service file. In this form the file is an XML document used by software such as Tableau to store map or video data.
Other uses include:
  • Game Data: Files compressed with GZIP that serve as save files in Trackmania or as a Telelogic Modeler System file.
  • Scale Configuration: UTF-8 encoded files that keep setup data for devices like ECS scales or the DIGI SM-5300 scale.
  • Sports Performance Data: ZIP compressed files that contain golf data for TrackMan performance analysis.
  • Retail Records: Files that store cash register transactions or weight measurements in systems like ECS Cash Register or Toledo Scale.
  • Texture Map Scripts: Files used in graphics applications (e.g. Tile Molester or KiriKiri) to control texture mapping.
  • Surface Data Files: Microsoft Compound formatted files that act as TopMap surface files for instruments such as DektakXT. More details are available on the Bruker website.
  • Telemedicine Video Files: Rare files that store video data for telemedicine studies.
  • FilExt.com note: Each variant requires the proper software to open it. Checking the internal structure—whether it is text-based (XML, UTF-8) or compressed (GZIP, ZIP)—is essential for determining the correct method to view or edit the file.

    How to open TMS files

You need a suitable software like Tableau to open a TMS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TMS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TMS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TMS files:

    1. Tableau
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TMS files are often referred to as Tableau gis because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. Telemate
Telemate is a DOS communication program (used, for example, for accessing a BBS using a modem). The identifying characters used for this association are - Hex: 54 4D 53 63 72 69 70 74 20, ASCII: TMScript.

    TMS file format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the TMS files produces the following result:

The file type with the extension 'TMS' is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

The remaining 60% of all TMS files are files with no common format, often, for example, Telemate compiled script, UTF-8, ZIP, DOC, ECS and TGMS. These files sometimes refer to chara, cutin, base, sample or hydro. If you want to find out what your TMS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with TMS files

    • Associate the TMS file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest TMS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Tableau update.
    • To make sure that your TMS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
