All about TRI Files

The TRI file type is primarily associated with Neuroscan.

TRIFile Extension TRI
File extension: TRI
File type:  triangulated head surface

What is a TRI file?

TRI files mostly belong to Neuroscan by Compumedics. Files with TRI file extension usually contain 3D models or meshes. FaceGen, a middleware used to generate 3D models of the human head, stores the polygonal mesh for the generated model in TRI format. Such TRI files may also contain morphs for animations used to emulate facial expressions. TRI files can also be triangular mesh files created using the TRI ASCII text format. These TRI files use triangular polygons and x, y, z coordinate vertices to store mesh data which are used to model 3D surfaces. Cart3D, a conceptual and preliminary aerodynamics design software stores triangulation data in TRI files. Neuroscan, an EEG and ERP data acquisition software stores 3D space triangulated head surfaces in TRI files. The LiveUpate utility in Symnatec software such as the antivirus, stores update lists in TRI files. Some legacy CAD design software such as Power Animator also used TRI format to store geometry data.

How do you open TRI files?

You need a suitable software like Neuroscan to open a TRI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TRI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TRI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TRI files:

  1. Neuroscan by Compumedics
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TRI files are often referred to as Neuroscan 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Alias (triangular mesh) by Autodesk
Alias is a 2D/3D computer-aided industrial design software suite optimized for generating class A surfaces in automotive and industrial design using NURBS and Bezier surface modeling. Alias can store the triangular meshes of a model in TRI files. This file format is classified as 3D Image.
  3. Cart3D (triangulation data) by NASA
Cart3D is a high-fidelity inviscid analysis package with capabilities for automated triangle geometry processing for surface modeling and Cartesian Grid Generation. The program is used for conceptual and preliminary aerodynamic design as well as CFD analysis. Cart3D stores triangulation data in TRI files. This file format is classified as Data. 4. CPAN (trigram scores) by CPAN
CPAN, short for the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network, is a web-based repository that hosts Perl programming language software modules and documentation. Its count.pl or statistic.pl module creates a trigram TRI file that stores trigram scores. This file format is classified as Data.
  5. LiveUpdate (product update list) by Symantec
LiveUpdate is a software update utility that is bundled with several Symnatec products such as Norton. It connects to the LiveUpdate server of the product to automatically download and install available updates. The LIVEUPDT.TRI file used by LiveUpdate contains the product update list. This file format is classified as Data.
  6. Quake (wireframe outlines) by id
Quake is a first-person shooter video game where the player is an unnamed operative that attempts to stop an enemy code-named Quake. The Texmake utility in Quake uses TRI files to generate wireframe outlines for artists to draw in. This file format is classified as Data.
  7. Ribbons (data) by Mike Carson
Ribbons is a software package for displaying molecular models as images. It uses the "facets" command to output a TRI file from a DSN6 file. This file format is classified as Data.

TRI file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the TRI files produces the following result:

The TRI file extension is used very often and includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

All the rest of the TRI files (45%) have different formats, often, for example, PIRT and Adobe. The category is code, ffotopa, body or pers. You can get all the details of your TRI file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .tri file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with TRI files

  • Associate the TRI file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open triangulated head surfaces. Because only the current version supports the latest TRI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Compumedics manufacturer website after an available Neuroscan update.
  • To make sure that your TRI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .TRI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
