What is a VIB file?

VIB files mostly belong to VMware vSphere.

VIB files are not a single type of file format. They can serve multiple purposes depending on the application that created them. In one role, these files are vSphere Installation Bundles used with VMware vSphere ESXi. They package drivers, updates, and modules for the hypervisor and are managed via command‐line tools such as esxcli. For more information, visit VMware.

• vSphere Installation Bundle: These package files install or update modules on ESXi hosts.
• Video Containers: Some VIB files act as containers for video data (often in a Bink format) that are used in games. More details are available at Rad Game Tools.

How to open VIB files

You need a suitable software like VMware vSphere to open a VIB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. VIB file format details:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the VIB files is as follows:

The VIB file extension is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 25% of all VIB files are associated with VMware vSphere Installation Bundle package files, which internally utilize the well-known LinuxAr format. This file format is an archive created by the Unix archiver "ar", which stores multiple files together in a single archive, that allows each one to be separately retrieved later. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 11 KB to 12 MB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: !<arch>, descriptor, name, type, version, vib version, vendor, bootbank, summary and VMware. A common filename is esxui-signed-12086396.vib. These files can be linked to bootbank, vmware, signed, esxui, esxi, console, remote, pernixcore and sphere.
• 20% of all VIB files have the same signature 09 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 03. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 2 GB. Such files sometimes refer to backup and desktop.

The remaining 55% of all VIB files are different files with different signatures, the following 6 formats can be found: BIKi.
