VMC file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the VMC files is as follows:
The VMC file extension is not common and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 60% of all VMC files belong to Virtual PC virtual machine configuration. The files are using the common file format XML. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. They consist of unreadable binary data. VMC files are between 11 KB and 14 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-16"?> and <!-- Microsoft Virtual Machine Options and Settings -->. A common filename is WindowsXP.vmc or SAP-DC1.vmc.
- 9% of all VMC files start with the magic bytes 4D 43 00 00 00 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 32 KB to 130 KB in size. SLOT0.VMC is a typical file name.
The remaining 31% of all VMC files are files with no common format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your VMC file!

How to solve problems with VMC files
- Associate the VMC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open virtual machine configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest VMC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Windows Virtual PC update.
- To make sure that your VMC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
