What is a VPT file?

VPT files mostly belong to Visual Pinball. Visual Pinball Table files (VPT) mainly store simulation data for pinball tables. They use the Microsoft Compound File format to hold multiple data streams such as table layouts, images, and physics settings.

Visual Pinball Table: This version of the VPT file holds the design and configuration information for a pinball table. It is used in the Visual Pinball environment to simulate table behavior. More details can be found at VPForums.

SEQUEL ViewPoint Dashboard: Another variation of the VPT file acts as a dashboard setup file to present data views in SEQUEL's system. Open these files with the corresponding SEQUEL ViewPoint dashboard software. See Fortra for further details.

How to open VPT files

You need a suitable software like Visual Pinball to open a VPT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VPT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VPT file directly in the browser:. VPT file format:

To view or edit VPT files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the VPT files is as follows:

VPT is not a common file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in VPT files:

• 25% of all VPT files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. Compound document files work similarly to real file systems. They contain a number of independent data streams (like files in a file system) which are organized in a hierarchy of containers (like sub-directories in a file system). The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 980 KB to 23 MB.
• 15% of all VPT files use the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. The file size is in the range of 200 bytes to 3 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Logging=N, Backcolor, Caption=SEQUEL ViewPoint Dashboard, Location, Type=Text, [Control_1] and [Dashboard]. These files are attributed to dashboard.
