Opening VSM Files
The VSM file type is primarily associated with Various (PicoScope, Altair, Ventsim, Vectorworks, etc.).
What is a VSM file?
VSM files are not one single file type but a file extension used by several applications to store specific data. They are created by different systems and each one is built to hold structured information.
- Vehicle Signal Measurement: This type stores data recorded by automotive oscilloscopes. For example, PicoScope uses these files (often called PicoScope Automotive Oscilloscope Data files) to save vehicle sensor signals for analysis. More details are available at PicoScope.
- VisSim Block Diagrams: Some VSM files contain block diagrams used in system simulation. These files help design and simulate system behavior. Visit Altair for related solutions.
- Simulation Models: In other cases, VSM files hold simulation models used in environments like Ventsim Visual Basic. In these files, data may be compressed (using GZIP) to hold model parameters and simulation configurations. See Ventsim.
- Macro Scripts: Certain VSM files are Vectorworks Macro Scripts. These contain instructions to automate tasks within Vectorworks Spotlight. Learn more at Vectorworks.
- Microscope and Visualization Data: Some files are linked to Veeco scanning microscopes. They may be used to store measurement data from instruments and work with visualization software such as systems offered by Newport Spectra-Physics.
- Scientific Measurement Data: VSM files can record data from instruments like a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. These files, used in labs and scientific applications, are part of systems from companies such as LakeShore VSM and MicroMag VSM System. Additional info is found at Lakeshore.
- Sports Scouting Metadata: In another use, some VSM files are in JSON format to store volleyball scouting data. These files hold structured information for performance analysis and are associated with scouting tools like Data Volley (DataVolley).
Purpose and Functionality: Each version of the VSM file is tailored to its specific application, whether to capture vehicle signals, structure simulation models, automate design tasks, store microscope data, record scientific measurements, or manage sports data. To open a VSM file, use the application that created it. If it is JSON based, a basic text editor might show its content. For compressed files (e.g., with GZIP), decompression steps may be needed.
How to open a VSM file
You need a suitable software like Various (PicoScope, Altair, Ventsim, Vectorworks, etc.) to open a VSM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VSM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VSM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert VSM files:
- Various (PicoScope, Altair, Ventsim, Vectorworks, etc.)
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. VSM files are often referred to as Various (PicoScope, Altair, Ventsim, Vectorworks, etc.) data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

VSM file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the VSM files comes to the following conclusion:
The VSM file extension is not found very often and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 25% of all VSM files save the data in XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 170 KB in size and range from 13 KB to 900 KB. It is a modern file type. The files contain the following words: <Vehicle year="" make="" model=""><Description></Description></Vehicle>@@. Files like these have the following tags: sensor and crank.
- 20% of all VSM files are based on the popular config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files contain text and words, not binary data. The files are on average 3 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 40 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ; VisSim Block Diagram Format (VBDF), Solutions, Visual, PN=1e-006, PT=1e-005, ; Copyright and PI=172. model7.vsm or 03 FOC Speed Control.vsm is a typical file name. Files like these have the following tags: control, speed, comparison and tuning.
All other VSM files (55%) have no consistent format, often e.g. GZIP, MCVS, version and RMF. Tagged as create, cozr, fesi or objects. You can get all the details of your VSM file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .vsm file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for VSM File Extension
a vsm data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with VSM files
- Associate the VSM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest VSM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Various (PicoScope, Altair, Ventsim, Vectorworks, etc.) update.
- To make sure that your VSM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .VSM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
