All about VTK Files
The VTK file type is primarily associated with ParaView.
What is a VTK file?
It holds information about geometric meshes, grids, and simulation results. The file can be in ASCII or binary format, making it flexible for various analysis purposes.
Key points as outlined by FilExt.com include:
How do you open VTK files?
You need a suitable software like ParaView to open a VTK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VTK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VTK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert VTK files:
- ParaView
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. VTK files are often referred to as ParaView data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ParaView (Legacy VTK File) by Kitware, Inc.ParaView is an application designed with the need to visualize large data sets in mind. ParaView is available as an open-source system. ParaView is a turn-key visualization system built on top of VTK that makes VTK easier to use with a point and click interface. VTK file format:
To find out what program is needed to open VTK files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our examination of the VTK files comes to the following conclusion:
The VTK file extension is quite widespread and predominantly uses a uniform format. The file formats most commonly found in VTK files are:
- 95% of all VTK files are Visualization Toolkit format files. VTK files can be up to 2 GB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 17 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. POINTS, float, ASCII, BINARY, # vtk DataFile Version 3.0, DATASET UNSTRUCTURED_GRID, DATASET POLYDATA and vtk output. Such files are related to mesh, solution, output, case, displacement, atoms, plate, flow and time.
- 1% of all VTK files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "#vtk" at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 190 bytes to 240 KB.
All other VTK files (4%) have different formats. They are often associated with model, stress, data, linear, fluid, framework, cylinder, result, volume or left. If you want to find out what your VTK file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for VTK File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a vtk data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with VTK files
- Associate the VTK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest VTK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available ParaView update.
- To make sure that your VTK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
