What is a VVD file?

VVD files mostly belong to Source 2 by Valve. Files with VVD extension are usually 3D model vertex data files created with Source Engine's proprietary model data format. Such VVD files are created with Source Engine's Studio utility and they consist of position-independent flat data used to specify the vertices, tangents, bone weights, textures, and normals used to render the 3D model stored in the MDL file. Valve Studio's VVD files have been used in creating 3D models' data used in video games such as Half-Life. The VVD file extension is also associated the native 3D scanner format used by the Vivid 3D scanner manufactured by Konica Minolta. This second type of VVD files are called scanner elements and they contain 3D images generated from multiple scans combined to create a 3D mesh.

How do you open VVD files?

You need a suitable software like Source 2 to open a VVD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VVD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VVD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

VVD file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the VVD files:

The VVD file extension is used very often and mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in VVD files:

All other VVD files (7%) have no consistent format. These files are often connected to pist, hunter, coach, laser, loona, rifle, loba or mach. If you want to find out which format your VVD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .vvd file to analyze".
