WAD file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the WAD files:
The WAD extension is very commonly used. This WAD file itself is among the most popular common file types and includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in WAD files:
- 25% of all WAD files are id Software files. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 110 KB to 130 MB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. PWAD. The file name DOOM_Eternal_OST.wad is typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: doom, eternal, metal, custom, music and sonic.
- 10% of all WAD files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "52 57 03" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 39 KB and 97 MB in size. A common filename is assets.wad or default-assets.wad. Files like these have the following tags: aatrox.
All other WAD files (65%) have no uniform format, the following 19 formats exist: WAD3 game data, Nintendo Wii Data, Wizard 101 game data, Starsky And Hutch game data archive, DoomRL WAD resource, ZIP, PNG, AGAR, ZWF, WWAD, WAD, HIG, DIR, DWFB and FFCS. Tagged as data, keyboard, world, desktop, channel or game. If you want to find out what your WAD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
