What is a WAL file?

WAL files mostly belong to etcd by etcd Authors. A WAL file is a texture for game objects and models used by id video games such as Quake II and Doom. This texture is saved in a proprietary format that is only compatible with these games. Another type of WAL file contains metadata, settings, and status information created by etcd key-value store application library. Postgresql database management system, for example, uses WAL files generated by etcd to implement write-ahead logs while Go software development kit uses etcd's wal module to save application state, metadata, and configuration.

How can I open a WAL file?

You need a suitable software like etcd to open a WAL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. WAL file extension format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the WAL files:

The WAL file extension is not common and covers a large number of different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

10% of all WAL files start with the bytes doom/ crucial for this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 5 KB and 21 KB in size. The files contain the following words: doom.
10% of all WAL files internally use the ZIP format, multiple files are compressed and combined into one WAL file. WAL files contain from 52 to 140 compressed files. File names are e.g. skin.xml. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. WAL files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 480 KB - 1 MB.

How to solve problems with WAL files

Associate the WAL file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open store configuration/metadata files. Because only the current version supports the latest WAL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the etcd Authors manufacturer website after an available etcd update.
