What is a WAM file?

WAM files mostly belong to WhatsApp. WAM files are specialized audio files tied to WhatsApp messaging.
They mainly store audio messages such as archived voice notes within the WhatsApp ecosystem.
These files come in different internal formats. For example:

Some are simple WhatsApp audio messages with little internal formatting details.

Others use an MP4 container, which makes them WhatsApp media files that follow common multimedia standards.

WAM file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. The following keywords are characteristic: ftypmp42, lmvhd, \tkhd, isommp42, moov and trak. whatsAppTmp.wam is a typical file name.
