Opening a WFD File
The WFD file type is primarily associated with Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Studio.
What is a WFD file?
Other uses include:
- Digitizer Data: Some WFD files capture sketch or ink input, as seen with Wacom systems (e.g. Wacom Inkling Sketch File used by Wacom Fujitsu Digitizer).
- Workflow Definitions: Certain files are saved as workflow definitions by applications like Workflow Designer, Emex Workflow Designer or Winshuttle Studio. These may use ZIP compression or even .NET-based structures for storing process data.
- Waveform Data: A few WFD files serve as waveform data records for signal collection. Such files can be found in environments like WFMPDC, a part of waveform data collection systems. For more information, visit the AESWave website.
FilExt.com notes: To view or edit a WFD file, it is best to determine its origin. For files from Xerox, use Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Studio (see also the Xerox website). For digitizer or workflow definition files, use the application that originally created the file. In some cases, a standard tool (like a ZIP extractor) may reveal additional internal data if the file is compressed.
How to open a WFD file
You need a suitable software like Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Studio to open a WFD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WFD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WFD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert WFD files:
- Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Studio
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. WFD files are often referred to as Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Studio data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Exchange (Workflow Process Definition) by Microsoft CorporationA workflow process is a series of tasks or events, the order in which they must be performed, and code that runs when they are performed. Related links: MSDN Workflow Process Description

WFD file format:
To find out what program is needed to open WFD files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the WFD files looks like this:
The WFD file extension is not found very often and includes various formats for various programs. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 40% of all WFD files start with the bytes CXOS0001 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 230 KB to 16 MB in size. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: CXOS0001 and CXOS0001*.
- 15% of all WFD files use the same file format, which have the signature storkafinger. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 7 MB in size and range from 4 MB to 44 MB. The keywords storkafinger are typical for these files. Examples of file names are 60_19.wfd or 22_4_3.wfd.
All other WFD files (45%) have different formats, the following 5 formats exist: .NET, ZIP and WFMPDC. Tagged as workflow, paper, print, mbglow or sample. If you want to find out what your WFD file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for WFD File Extension
a wfd workflow file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with WFD files
- Associate the WFD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open workflow files. Because only the current version supports the latest WFD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Xerox FreeFlow Digital Workflow Studio update.
- To make sure that your WFD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .WFD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
