What is a WT file?

WT files mostly belong to MongoDB. The WT file is most often a WiredTiger database file. It is used internally by MongoDB to store database collections, indexes, and logs in a binary format. This file is part of a high-performance storage engine that uses methods like compression and concurrency control, so you cannot simply open it with a text editor.
In some rare cases, a WT file may be a Word Theme vocabulary file that is stored as a ZIP archive. This use is less common, and the file contains theme-related vocabulary for styling documents.

To view or edit WT files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. The WT extension is very commonly used. This WT file itself is among the most popular common file types and mainly uses a defined WT format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 90% of all WT files have the same signature 41 D8 01 00 01 00 00 00 D8 08 23 B7. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 16 KB and 210 KB in size. File names inside are always dictionary.txt and removed.txt. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are on average 15 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 110 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. dictionary.txt. These files are often associated with dictionary, mydictionary, vocabulary, rterbuch and mein.
