All about WT Files
The WT file type is primarily associated with MongoDB.
What is a WT file?
In some rare cases, a WT file may be a Word Theme vocabulary file that is stored as a ZIP archive. This use is less common, and the file contains theme-related vocabulary for styling documents.
- WiredTiger Database File: Primary use for MongoDB internal data management.
- Word Theme Vocabulary File: Secondary use as a ZIP-compressed file for Word themes.
FilExt.com tips: To work with a WiredTiger file, use MongoDB’s dedicated tools. If you encounter the Word Theme file, open it with a ZIP utility to examine its contents. Avoid manual modifications to prevent data corruption.
How do you open WT files?
You need a suitable software like MongoDB to open a WT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

WT file format details:
To view or edit WT files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the WT files:
The WT extension is very commonly used. This WT file itself is among the most popular common file types and mainly uses a defined WT format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 90% of all WT files have the same signature 41 D8 01 00 01 00 00 00 D8 08 23 B7. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 16 KB and 210 KB in size. It is a modern file type. Examples of file names are _mdb_catalog.wt. Files like these have the following tags: collection, index, catalog, wired, tiger, storer, size and tigerlas.
- 2% of all WT files use ZIP compression, so several files are compressed and saved in one WT file. WT files contain from 1 to 2 compressed files. File names inside are always dictionary.txt and removed.txt. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are on average 15 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 110 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. dictionary.txt. These files are often associated with dictionary, mydictionary, vocabulary, rterbuch and mein.
All the rest of the WT files (8%) have different formats, frequently e.g. XML, config, COMMENTS, vawt and WINETDS. Often described as tigerhs, textured, details, login, edtm or hars. Just click the "Choose your .wt file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your WT file is.
Technical Data for WT File Extension

a wt database file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with WT files
- Associate the WT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open database files. Because only the current version supports the latest WT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available MongoDB update.
- To make sure that your WT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .WT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
