What is a WTG file?

WTG files mostly belong to Bentley WaterGems.

• Water Network Model: Many WTG files are Bentley WaterGems project files stored in XML. These files hold data for water network models such as pipes, valves, and pumps. You can view them with Bentley WaterGems. Visit Bentley for more details.
  
• Wind Turbine Generator Data: Some WTG files contain wind turbine generator data. They are used with software like WindPRO and WAsP for wind energy analysis. More info is available at WindPRO and WAsP.

How do you open WTG files?

You need a suitable software like Bentley WaterGems to open a WTG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. WTG format details:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the WTG files produces the following result:

The WTG file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in WTG files:

• 55% of all WTG files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are on average 68 KB in size and range from 64 KB to 110 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>, <StorageFile xmlns="http://www.haestad.com">, <StorageFileHeader Version="1", Label, Project Settings and Settings" ProductCrea. These files are attributed to model, water, zone, project and network.
• 10% of all WTG files start with the bytes *WEATHER DATA : @ INSI LAT LONG ELEV TAV, which are crucial for this file format. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. Most of these files are 11 KB to 11 KB in size. The files contain the following words: *WEATHER DATA , @ INSI   LAT   LONG ELEV   TAV   AMP REFHT WNDHT, @DATE SRAD TMAX TMIN RAIN and CLIM. The file name CLIM0101.WTG is characteristic of these files.
