All about Z04 Files
The Z04 file type is primarily associated with WinZip.
What is a Z04 file?
- Main Usage: The original compressed archive, a ZIP file, is used to group files into a single archive for organisational purposes, while applying a compression algorithm to reduce the disk space required to store this data. Splitting an archive can be useful for sending large amounts of data through channels such as email, which often imposes restrictions on the size of attachments. This file type is similar to other split archives, such as archives beginning with R0 files, which are split RAR archives, also used by WinRAR.
- Other features: Recreating the original archive can be simplified by the inclusion of a file with the same filename and the ZIP extension, which will automatically recreate the archive from the split archive parts if present.
- Compatibility: Programs exist on most popular operating systems to recreate the original compressed file, including on Windows, MacOS, and Linux. In other cases, the original ZIP file can be recreated manually by concatenating the parts in order.

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the Z04 files looks like this:
