What is a Z64 file?

Z64 files mostly belong to Mupen64Plus by Nintendo. A Z64 file is a disk image containing a video game extracted from the read-only memory of a Nintendo 64 console's cartridge. This file was originally created by Mr. Backup Z64, a portable device which allowed users to save the ROM image of a game to a diskette which can be mounted and played using a Nintendo 64 emulator. Project64, UltraHLE, and Mupen64Plus are among Nintendo 64 emulators that can play a game saved as a Z64 ROM image.

How to open a Z64 file

You need a suitable software like Mupen64Plus from Nintendo to open a Z64 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your Z64 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a Z64 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Z64 file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the Z64 files produces the following result:

The Z64 file extension is not common and mainly uses a special format. The following file formats are most commonly found in Z64 files:

All other Z64 files (5%) have different formats. The category is kazooie, ocarina, project, impact, koruro, wonder, jozet, kart, last or time. If you want to find out what your Z64 file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
