What is a BUN file

BUN files mostly belong to NFS-TexEd. BUN files are bundle files that group several resources in one package. They are mostly used in video games, but they can also hold other data.
These files have several specialized uses:

• Game Asset Bundles: They store textures and archives used in games such as those in the Need for Speed series. Tools like NFS-TexEd work with them.
• Unity Archives: Some BUN files use the UnityFS format to pack game assets made with the Unity engine.

How to open BUN files

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the BUN files produces the following result:

BUN is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 20% of all BUN files have the same signature 00 00 30 B3. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 140 KB and 6 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Global and FCop01. A common filename is GLOBALA.BUN or Scene_Arrestf02_Bundleb.bun. Files like these have the following tags: bundleb, scene, arrestf and ingamea.
• 9% of all BUN files are using the well-known RIFF file format to store the data. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 61 MB in size and range from 16 KB to 77 MB. The keywords PAD, WAVEfmt and RIFF are typical for these files.
