Opening a BUN File
The BUN file type is primarily associated with NFS-TexEd.
What is a BUN file
These files have several specialized uses:
- Game Asset Bundles: They store textures and archives used in games such as those in the Need for Speed series. Tools like NFS-TexEd work with them.
- Unity Archives: Some BUN files use the UnityFS format to pack game assets made with the Unity engine.
- Audio Containers: Certain BUN files contain audio data, for example Sound Blaster files or RIFF-based waveform audio files. More info can be found at this site.
- Console & Scene Bundles: They also appear as resource packages, such as PS2 IRX bundles or binary scene files used for game executables. See PS2 Save Tools for details.
- Database Files: A small number of these files, like the BADA OS database file, serve non-game purposes.
FilExt.com tip: To open a BUN file, you need software meant for the specific type; for example, NFS-TexEd for Need for Speed bundles or UnityFS extractors for Unity files. Communities such as Live for Speed and official websites like EA may offer guidance.
How to open BUN files
You need a suitable software like NFS-TexEd to open a BUN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BUN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BUN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert BUN files:
- NFS-TexEd
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. BUN files are often referred to as NFS-TexEd games because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

BUN file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the BUN files produces the following result:
BUN is seldom used as a file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 20% of all BUN files have the same signature 00 00 30 B3. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 1 MB with most files being between 140 KB and 6 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: Global and FCop01. A common filename is GLOBALA.BUN or Scene_Arrestf02_Bundleb.bun. Files like these have the following tags: bundleb, scene, arrestf and ingamea.
- 9% of all BUN files are using the well-known RIFF file format to store the data. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 61 MB in size and range from 16 KB to 77 MB. The keywords PAD, WAVEfmt and RIFF are typical for these files.
The remaining 71% of all BUN files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. UnityFS. Often described as streaml, bread, sourdough, global, simple, fronta, intro or nisbl. Just click the "Choose your .bun file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your BUN file is.

How to solve problems with BUN files
- Associate the BUN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open bundle files. Because only the current version supports the latest BUN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available NFS-TexEd update.
- To make sure that your BUN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BUN file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
