What is a DSK file?

DSK files mostly belong to Disk Utility by Apple. A DSK file is a disk image. Although such disk images have the same filename extension, they are actually saved in different formats used by various operating systems. Disk Utility, for example, can mount and read a DSK file containing a Macintosh disk image. ISOBuster cab import, read, and write a generic disk image saved in a DSK file. Older versions of Delphi integrated development environment save desktop application projects in a DSK file.

How to open DSK files

You need a suitable software like Disk Utility to open a DSK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your DSK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a DSK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

DSK file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the DSK files:

You will often come across the DSK file type. This does not have a uniform file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

All other DSK files (84%) have no consistent format, often, for example, Generic PC disk image, Apple II ProDOS disk image, CP/M non-bootable disk image, CPCEMU Disk image format, IBM SKF disk image, Turbo Pascal Desktop and Turbo C Context. These files sometimes refer to disk, device, games, local, cauldron or boot. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your DSK file!

a dsk disk image is a special file format by Apple and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with DSK files

  • Associate the DSK file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open disk images. Because only the current version supports the latest DSK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Apple manufacturer website after an available Disk Utility update.
  • To make sure that your DSK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .DSK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
