Opening an FMT File
The FMT file type is primarily associated with Visual FoxPro.
What is an FMT file?
- Main usage: The data formats stored in FMT files are used to validate data entered by users in FoxPro program. Thus, the FMT files are used as settings or reference files by programs like FoxPro or Visual FoxPro while creating databases or tables etc.
- Associations:
-
- WinRAR, a compression and decompression tool, uses FMT files to store different data related to different compression formats. These files are stored in the Format directory of WinRAR installation.
- A Computer Assisted Design CAD program Pro-engineer uses FMT extension for its format files that are used to store different CAD formats.
- Format files associated with Sansa, a portable media player, uses FMT extension. These files are used for playback of audio recordings.
- Ox, an object-oriented matrix language and statistical system, uses FMT files for storing gauss matrix data.
How to open an FMT file
You need a suitable software like Visual FoxPro to open an FMT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FMT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FMT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

FMT format details:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below is our analysis of the FMT files:
FMT is a very common file type and has no uniform or dominant file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all FMT files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "08 00 02 00" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are often between 13 KB and 38 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. These files are often associated with label, laferniere, yogurt, pressed, carton, lemon and leova.
- 9% of all FMT files start with the bytes 00 00 02 00 crucial for this file format. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. Most of these files are 460 bytes to 4 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as SYMB.
The remaining 71% of all FMT files are files with no common format, often e.g. config, UTF-16 (LE), UTF-8, XML, Time, stride, TYPE, Object and Format. These files are often connected to format, coredirector, bikom, bulk, sekonic, database, autotbl, payable, export, iouse or store. How to solve problems with FMT files
- Associate the FMT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data format files. Because only the current version supports the latest FMT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Microsoft manufacturer website after an available Visual FoxPro update.
- To make sure that your FMT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FMT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
