All about FOR Files
The FOR file type is primarily associated with Text Editor.
What is a FOR file?
Sometimes these files serve other roles. For example:
You can open a FOR file using a simple text editor. However, for coding or compiling, using an IDE or a FORTRAN compiler is advised. Also, check the file’s encoding (UTF-8 or UTF-16) to display the content correctly.

How to open FOR files
You need a suitable software like Text Editor to open a FOR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FOR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FOR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert FOR files:
- Text Editor
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. FOR files are often referred to as Text Editor developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Font Resource File16-bit DLL/EXE files that seem to contain nothing more than a resource giving the path of a TTF font.

- PDP-10The PDP-10 was a mainframe computer manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) from the late 1960s; the name stands for Programmed Data Processor model 10. The PDP-10 was eventually eclipsed by the VAX supermini machines. The PDP-10 product line cancellation was announced in 1983. Compilers output REL files. Related links: Wikipedia PDP-10 Page

FOR file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the FOR files produces the following result:
As a file extension, FOR isn't very common and includes a lot of different file formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 7% of all FOR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters " Weekly SST data starts week centered on 3Jan1990 " at the beginning. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 79 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: 03JAN1990 23.4-0.4, Nino1+2 Nino3 Nino34 Nino4, SSTA, Week and Weekly SST data starts week centered on 3Jan1990. A common filename is getdata_wksst8110.for. Files like these are about getdata and wksst.
- 6% of all FOR files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "c Begin file " at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 41 KB to 170 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Begin file, This file, routines and contains. These files can be linked to core.
All other FOR files (87%) have different formats, such as UTF-16 (LE). They are often associated with matrix, ordner or heat. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your FOR file!
Technical Data for FOR File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a for source code file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with FOR files
- Associate the FOR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open source code files. Because only the current version supports the latest FOR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Text Editor update.
- To make sure that your FOR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .FOR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
