Opening a MER File
The MER file type is primarily associated with FactoryTalk View.
What is a MER file?
How to open a MER file
You need a suitable software like FactoryTalk View to open a MER file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MER file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MER file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MER file format:
To view or edit MER files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the MER files:
The MER file ending includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 60% of all MER files use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. Compound document files are used to structure the contents of a document in the file. It is possible to divide the data into several streams, and to store these streams in different places in the file. In this way compound document files support a complete file system inside the file, the streams are like files in a real file system, and the sections are like subdirectories. The file signature of compound files is defined as D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1, so the first character of a file looks like "DOCFILE". The unique Windows component object identifier is be87c5e3-e3cb-4bab-8427-578ecce263f7. Sections and streams in the file have names like DLG, Gfx, Information, ComPrf, FTDLocal, Images, Local, Macros, PAR, ProjectSettings, Startup, Tag, Cache, KepServer, RSLinx Enterprise, DIRSIZE_INFORMATION, PRODUCT_VERSION_INFORMATION, VERSION_INFORMATION, Accounts, Global Objects and RecipePlus. The files are often between 570 KB and 5 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Files like these are about line.
- 2% of all MER files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "Pr" at the beginning. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The average file size is 11 KB with most files being between 5 KB and 22 KB in size. The files contain the following words: Name. These files are often associated with ringdahl, mailing and list.
All the rest of the MER files (38%) have different formats, the following 3 formats exist: Entity-Relationship Diagram. They are often associated with tier, ininventory, facilities, chemicals, export or data. You can get all the details of your MER file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .mer file to analyze" above.

a mer runtime application is a special file format by Rockwell Automation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with MER files
- Associate the MER file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open runtime applications. Because only the current version supports the latest MER file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Rockwell Automation manufacturer website after an available FactoryTalk View update.
- To make sure that your MER file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MER file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
