Opening a PRE File
The PRE file type is primarily associated with Freelance.
What is a PRE file?
- Main Use: Freelance Graphics, an application offered on Windows PCs as a part of the Lotus SmartSuite is used to create presentations. The software uses PRE files to save multiples slides, each consisting of various types of information such as layouts, pictures, and formatted text. Apart from the Windows-based Freelance Graphics software, PRE files can also be opened using on Windows PCs using Microsoft PowerPoint as well as Corel Presentations. Corel Presentations can open PRE files on Macs as well.
- Other Uses: The Windows-compatible audio editing program, Nero WaveEditor, uses the PRE file format to store WaveEditor preset information. Insight II is a graphical molecular modeling program that uses PRE files for storing dynamics scratch data. PRE files are linked to the security hardware and software development company, SonicWALL, for storing SGMS syslog data.
How do you open PRE files?
You need a suitable software like Freelance to open a PRE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PRE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PRE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PRE files:
- Freelance by IBM
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PRE files are often referred to as Freelance page layouts because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Global Management System (GMS syslog) by SonicWallGlobal Management System (also known as GMS or SGMS) is a cybersecurity software from SonicWall. A PRE file stores a syslog in Global Management System. It is generated if there are problems uploading the raw syslog data to the Reports Database. If the data is uploaded successfully, a PRD file is created. This file format is classified as Database. - Insight (dynamics scratch data file) by AccelrysInsight is a molecular modeling environment with a graphical user interface. It was developed by Accelrys, which is now BIOVIA. The PRE extension is associated with Insight II and stores dynamics scratch data. This file format is classified as Data. - Programmer's Workbench (Programmer's Workbench settings) by AT&T Bell LaboratoriesProgrammer's Workbench (PWB) is an early Unix installation that was developed by AT&T Bell Laboratories (now Nokia Bell Labs). It provides a time-sharing working environment for large software development projects. The PRE file stores Programmer's Workbench settings. This file format is classified as Settings. - WaveEditor (Wave Editor preset file) by NeroWave Editor is a software for recording and editing audio files that was part of the Nero Multimedia Suite and is now provided separately as a free tool. The PRE file format stores a Wave Editor preset. This file format is classified as Settings. Related links: Wave Editor on Wikipedia, Nero Wave Editor Tutorial, Forum Discussion Mentioning PRE Files
PRE file format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the PRE files looks like this:
The PRE file type includes different formats for the applicable programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 35% of all PRE files start with the bytes 00 01 40 00 44 45 42 52 40, which are crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 19 KB to 470 KB. The file type was primarily used more than 20 years ago. The following keywords are characteristic: CHAG and DEBR@. Files like these are about level and sdbe.
- 15% of all PRE files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content also consists of readable text fragments, which can be viewed with the help of a text editor. The file size is in the range of 27 KB to 150 KB. The files contain the following words: "DmePresetGroup", "id" "elementid", "presets" "element_array", <!-- dmx encoding keyvalues2 1 format preset 4 --> and "name" "string" "game_shapes". An example of a file name is coach_game.pre or gambler_game.pre. These files can be linked to game, survivor, coach, mechanic, producer, gambler and phoneme.
All the rest of the PRE files (50%) have different formats, the following 4 formats exist: zlib and Tyndall. Files like these are sometimes linked to report, developer, cutdown, preset or viseme. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PRE file!

a pre presentation file is a special file format by IBM and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PRE files
- Associate the PRE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open presentation files. Because only the current version supports the latest PRE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the IBM manufacturer website after an available Freelance update.
- To make sure that your PRE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PRE file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
