Opening a PTM File
The PTM file type is primarily associated with MapPoint.
What is a PTM file?
- MapPoint Map File: This type uses the Microsoft Compound format and is designed for storing map data in Microsoft MapPoint. It holds geographic information used for planning and route analysis.
- Transformer Model File: This variant packages power transformer data in a compressed ZIP format. It is used by engineering tools such as Omicron PTM and is recognized by Siemens Protection Manager for handling relay and transformer data.
- 3D Image File: Some PTM files are used by PTGui to store RTI (Reflectance Transformation Imaging) or 3D point cloud data. More details can be found at the PTGui webpage.
- C64 Cartridge/Module File: Another use of PTM is in vintage computing, where it serves as a C64 cartridge image for the Vice emulator. In some cases, it also represents PolyTracker music module data. See more at the Vice emulator webpage.
FilExt.com note: Each PTM file must be opened with its corresponding software; knowing the source application is key for proper viewing and editing.
How can I open a PTM file?
You need a suitable software like MapPoint to open a PTM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PTM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PTM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PTM file format:
To find out what program is needed to open PTM files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the PTM files is as follows:
The PTM file extension is used very often and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 20% of all PTM files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The app name of a PTM file is Microsoft MapPoint. The globally unique identifier of this file type is 31851f84-afe6-11d2-a3c9-00c04f72f340 or 15a40124-24d2-4fdb-8155-5f65fce7017f. Sections and streams in the file are named Annotations, Contents, Highlights, Journey, Olhud5yvVwudb10uAaq5ezn4Ac, SummaryInformation, UserData, OnlineSearch and Rendering. PTM files are between 22 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such files are related to territories and locations.
- 3% of all PTM files are based on the zip format, so several files are compressed and saved in one PTM file. A PTM file includes 21 to 110 files. Common included file names are Relationship.xml, [Content_Types].xml, settings.xml and version. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The average file size is 660 KB with most files being between 35 KB and 1 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Substations, xml, PTM 4 and version.
The remaining 77% of all PTM files are different files with different signatures, the following 3 formats exist: Polynomial Texture Map. They are often associated with stage, tune, base, custom, ambottuned, stratified or tuned. Just click the "Choose your .ptm file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your PTM file is.

a ptm data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PTM files
- Associate the PTM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest PTM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available MapPoint update.
- To make sure that your PTM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PTM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
