All about QRY Files

The QRY file type is primarily associated with Microsoft Access.

QRYFile Extension QRY
File extension: QRY
File type:  query file

What is a QRY file

QRY files mostly belong to Microsoft Access. QRY files store query instructions for various systems. They do not hold data themselves but contain commands that tell a database or an application how to search, filter, or process data.
These files are used in different environments. For example:
  • Database Queries: Many QRY files in Microsoft Access systems contain SQL-based statements that retrieve or manipulate data.
  • GIS Analysis: Some QRY files, like those used by ArcGIS Pro, store commands for processing crash data. More details are available at ArcGIS Pro Resources.
  • Reporting Systems: In systems such as Crystal Reports or SAP BusinessObjects, QRY files hold the query definitions that drive report generation. See further information at Microsoft Documentation or SAP Crystal Reports.
  • XML-Based Queries: Some QRY files use an XML format to define the queries, as seen in tools from Doble Engineering.
  • Development Applications: Other QRY files are implemented in agile development environments like ClearQuest to manage query processing.
  • Usage: Open these files with a text editor to inspect their structure. Then, use the host application that created the file to run the query.

    How to open QRY files

You need a suitable software like Microsoft Access to open a QRY file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your QRY file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a QRY file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert QRY files:

    1. Microsoft Access
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. QRY files are often referred to as Microsoft Access databases because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
    2. BI/Query
    3. dBASE IV Query
    4. Lotus Approach Query for SQL Tables
    5. Query
This extension is almost always some form of query; on small systems the query is likely designed to be against some specific database; on large systems the query is likely against some form of SQL running on a server or mainframe. The Mime types used with this association are: application/x-qry.
    6. Query by Microsoft Corporation

    QRY file extension format:

To view or edit QRY files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the QRY files:

The QRY file extension is not widely used. Such a file is used by many programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 60% of all QRY files are files with no common format, frequently e.g. XML. Often described as cash, audit, data or jobs. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your QRY file!

How to solve problems with QRY files

    • Associate the QRY file extension with the correct application.
    • Update your software that should actually open query files. Because only the current version supports the latest QRY file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Microsoft Access update.
    • To make sure that your QRY file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
