What is an R01 file?

R01 files mostly belong to WinRAR by RARLAB. When a large compressed archive created by WinRAR or RAR is split into pieces, the first part is named with the R01 extension.

Nomenclature: Every piece is named numerically from R00 then R01 upwards dependent on how many pieces they are split into. Split archive files can range from the first one R01 up to R99
Reason for splitting: A split-archive file enables large files to be stored as a collection of several pieces. This enables storage of the compressed data across several small storage containers such as 700 megabyte discs as the archive is too big to fit on a single disc.
Accessing contents: Windows usually associates a default program to use files with the extension R01. Several freeware programs are compatible with archive files such as WinRar, WinZip, 7-Zip and RAR.

How to open R01 files

You need a suitable software like WinRAR to open an R01 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
