What is a REG file?
How to open REG files
You need a suitable software like Wine to open a REG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your REG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a REG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

REG format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the REG files:
REG is a very common file type and mainly uses a defined REG format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all REG files are associated with Windows Registry Data files, which internally utilize the well-known UTF-16 (LE) format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. REG files are between 290 bytes and 240 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00, Software, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Some examples of file names are Add Keys.reg or cc_20180601.reg. Files like these are sometimes connected to keys, registry, mode, backup, server, debug, solidsquadloader, enabler and enable.
- 15% of all REG files save the data in UTF-8 file format. UTF-8 is the World Wide Web's most common character encoding for Unicode. UTF-8 files can be viewed with any text editor. These files start with the 3 bytes (hex: EF BB BF), the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files contain text and words, not binary data. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 2 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ILRegKey, REGEDIT4 and [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Image-Line\Registrations\FL Studio 20]. Some examples of file names are FLRegKey.reg or FLRegKey_20.8_Mac.reg.
All other REG files (15%) have no uniform format, frequently e.g. Wine Registry, config, SQL, PDF and regf. The category is system, disable, windows, settings, xfffff, registrationdb, microsoft or priority. You can get all the details of your REG file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .reg file to analyze" above.
