Opening ZTMP Files
The ZTMP file type is primarily associated with Game Engines.
What is a ZTMP file
These files often use different compression methods. For example, some use Bzip2 (BZ2) compression as seen in files managed by ZModeler (see ZModeler) which is linked to the GoldSrc engine.
Other files use LZSS compression. This method is common in Garry's Mod, where they act as compressed temporary files related to map processing (GMod).
Additionally, the Source Engine generates similar files during map compiling and cache handling (Source Engine Docs).
How can I open a ZTMP file?
You need a suitable software like Game Engines to open a ZTMP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ZTMP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ZTMP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ZTMP files:
- Game Engines
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ZTMP files are often referred to as Game Engines compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Steam (Zipped Half-Life Map/Mod File) by Valve CorporationWhen a Steam client downloads a resource from a Steam game server (like a .BSD map), the resource is first compressed to save bandwidth. An associated .ZTMP file is stored on the server so the resource won't need to be compressed again the next time a client requests it. If you change the resource you need to delete the associated .ZTMP file so that the next person who downloads is doesn't get the old copy instead of the changed resource file (Steam does not detect changed game resource files and recreate the .ZTMP file automatically.) This file format is classified as Archive.
ZTMP format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the ZTMP files comes to the following conclusion:
ZTMP is not a commonly used file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 50% of all ZTMP files are based on the well-known BZ2 file format. The BZ2 format is used by the bzip2 command in Linux to compress and decompress files. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 200 KB with most files being between 9 KB and 980 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as BZh91AY&SY. Files like these are about ctwinnar, headshot and twinnar.
- 35% of all ZTMP files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "LZSS" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. ZTMP files can be up to 24 MB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 4 MB. The files contain the following words: LZSS.
All other ZTMP files (15%) have no uniform format, such as SNAP. If you want to find out what your ZTMP file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for ZTMP File Extension
a ztmp temporary compressed file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ZTMP files
- Associate the ZTMP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open temporary compressed files. Because only the current version supports the latest ZTMP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Game Engines update.
- To make sure that your ZTMP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ZTMP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
