Notes about the WIM file extension:
Incorrect file associations could be the result of underlying issues within your PC system. As such it is highly recommended to
scan your PC for invalid registry entries, unused processes and other unfavourable system settings to identify slowdown issues.
The WIM file type is primarily associated with 'Windows' by Microsoft Corporation. Windows Imaging Format is a file-based rather than sector-based image format. This means that the disk image can use Single-Instance Storage (SIS) technology. SIS allows duplicate files to be stored only once. In addition, .WIM files are highly compressed so the image is about one-third of the original. You can use .WIM files without deleting the original partition/directory beforehand. It appears that Microsoft will be using .WIM files for some future deployments. 7-Zip claims to be able to unarchive a WIM file. The Microsoft Solution Accelerator for Business Desktop Deployment creates .WIM files for distribution.
