What is a BKS file?
How to open a BKS file
You need a suitable software like Windows 2000 to open a BKS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BKS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BKS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

BKS file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the BKS files looks like this:
The BKS file extension includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all BKS files use the same file format, which have the signature 00 00 00 02 00. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are 1 KB to 32 KB in size, with a median of 2 KB. The file type is relatively new. The keywords root are typical for these files. An example of a file name is updatesdkcas.bks or grs_sp.bks. Files like these are sometimes connected to keystore, hmsrootcas, hmsincas, client, truststore, cert, certificate, smartms and chain.
- 30% of all BKS files start with the bytes 00 00 00 01 00 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 1 KB in size and range from 1 KB to 7 KB. A common filename is keystore.bks. Such files are related to prod, wifitransfer, attmessages, server and sekeh.
The remaining 20% of all BKS files are different files with different signatures, the following 4 formats exist: IBM Softcopy Reader book and ZIP. They are often associated with fiskalcertstore or irobotkeystore. Just click the "Choose your .bks file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your BKS file is.
